Like a good neighbor, Kollin’s been there June 27, 2010

If I have achieved some success during my four short months as a single dad, and I believe that I have, it sure hasn’t come about in a vacuum. I have been blessed with an extensive network of support—people from various corners of my life that have either stepped up or stepped in on my behalf.

Kollin has played an important role in Austin's transition and the boys have remained good friends.

I was reminded of that again today—watching Austin toss a football around with our neighbor Kollin. The boys became friends during Austin’s visit with me last December, so the two of us were happy to be on hand for a party to celebrate Kollin’s high school graduation.

Kollin and his family have played a critical role in helping Austin settle into his new life in Rochester. Early on, the boys spent time playing video games, and Austin would eventually get introduced to some of Kollin’s friends. On Austin’s first day at Eastridge High School, Kollin was there to help show his new neighbor around the place and point him toward wherever he needed to be. And on most days that followed, Kollin was kind enough to drive Austin to and from school.

Mary and Steve, Kollin’s parents, have been no less supportive. I remember the panic I felt in April while preparing for several days in Detroit to cover the NCAA Frozen Four hockey tournament. Austin had school—and his job—so he needed to stay home, but I couldn’t leave him there unsupervised. Mary and Steve graciously offered to let Austin spend overnights at their house and made sure he was fed. This was such a huge relief to me, and it only represents a sample of the hospitality they have shown Austin and me.

Kollin is a busy guy, currently holding down two jobs while preparing to attend college at Alfred State this fall. The boys probably won’t get a lot of opportunity to spend time together this summer, but it will in no way diminish the impact of the time they’ve already shared.

Awww Paul, we are so glad that you guys could make it to Kollin’s party, but more importantly, we are honored that you have shared this wonderful experience with us. Austin is a great kid, and I am so happy that the 2 of you found each other. With all of the awful things that happen in this world, it is such a pleasure to see a story like Austin’s unfold in a positive way.
