The reawakening of Spring April 3, 2010

I remember thinking last night, as I prepared for bed, just how much I was looking forward to waking up. Seriously! I haven’t felt that way in a long time. But, on this morning, I had something to look forward to—a date with an old and dear friend. Spring!

Daffodils blooming in my backyard

For months now, mornings have represented a period of combat—the combat for consciousness. Dragging myself out of bed in the cold and the darkness can be nothing short of agony, quite frankly. But the times they are a changin’!

For me, one of life’s great pleasures occurs in the milder months, on weekend mornings, like this one. The sun’s up, but my neighbors are not. So I brew some coffee, take it out on my back patio, and I sit—and I listen—and I reflect. And I remember that I am blessed.

Spring, for me, is more than a season. It’s a reawakening. And along with that comes the recognition that we can’t have light without darkness; warmth without the chill; good without evil. That realization seems particularly timely as people of faith all across the world commemorate Easter and Passover.

In that spirit, I wish you good health and happiness on this beautiful holiday weekend!
